JACQUES LOUIS DAVID. 1748-1825

81 ANDROMACHE MOURNING OVER HECTOR. 1783

Oil on canvas. 58 X 43 cm. Inv. No 843 Signed and dated lower left: L. David 1783 The picture is a finished sketch for the painting of the same name, which was presented to the jury of the Royal Academy on August 22, 1783, and won David the title of Academician (it is now in The Louvre). A preliminary drawing for this picture in black chalk and wash (29 X 24.6 cm; Inv. No 180) is in the Musee du Petit-Palais in Paris. Signed and dated 1782, it differs in some details from the Pushkin Museum piece. A drawing from the former collection of Dumont, engraved by Jacques Louis Jules David in 1882, is also known.

82 PORTRAIT OF INGRES AS A YOUNG MAN (?)

Oil on canvas. 54 X 46 cm. Inv. No 844 The traditional iconographic identification of the model as the painter Ingres at the time of his apprenticeship to David in 1798 is refuted now by almost all French students of David because of a very doubtful resemblance to other portraits of Ingres. It is possible that this portrait belongs to David's latest period. Provenance: until 1882 The E. Fould Collection, Paris; 1882—88 The A. Goupil Collection, Paris; until 1892 The S. Tretyakov Collection, Moscow; 1892—1925 The Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; since 1925 The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow

Exhibitions: 1874 Paris, Alsace-Lorrains, Cat. 91; 1883 Paris, Cat. 46; 1955 Moscow, Cat., p. 29; 1956
