Oil on canvas. 68 X 198 cm. Inv. No 3543 Signed lower left: J. L. Gerome

Auctioned with the Wilson Collection in the Georges Petit Gallery in Paris in 1881 was a small Gerome picture of the same name (lot 162, 20 X 32 cm), which probably represents a sketch for the Pushkin Museum piece. Another similarly entitled canvas in the Pereire Collection was listed in the catalogue of the 1891 sale in Paris.
