The picture was painted in June 1888 at Saintes-Ma-ries-de-la-Mer on the Mediterranean, not far from Aries. In addition to the Moscow picture, Dr De La Faille mentions two more seascapes done by Van Gogh at Saintes-Maries, one of which is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. There exist several drawings on the same theme. The one bearing the strongest resemlance to the Pushkin Museum canvas (pen and India ink) is in the Musees Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

Oil on canvas. 72 X 90 cm. Inv. No 3374 The picture was painted at Auvers in July 1890, one month before Van Gogh's death. A similar variant, La Route pres d'Auvers, is now in a private collection in New York.

Oil on canvas. 73 X 91 cm. Inv. No 3372 The picture was painted at Aries in November 1888. This dating is supported by Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo (Nos 559, 561). A little earlier, in October 1888, the artist completed his Champ de vignes (La Vigne verte) (in the Kroller-Muller Museum, Otterloo), which differs from the Moscow canvas primarily in its color scale, dominated by green tones.

No 3272 Signed and dated lower right: Vincent Aries 89 Van Gogh painted this portrait in January 1889 at Aries and presented it to Dr Felix Rey, who sold it in 1900 to Ambroise Vollard. Van Gogh mentions the portrait in his letters to Theo (Nos 568, 571). In 1926 V. Sidorova identified the model as Dr Rey.

Oil on canvas. 80 X 64 cm. Inv. No 3373 The picture was painted by Van Gogh in February 1890 at Saint-Remy, where he stayed in an asylum. It represents a free copy of Gustave Dore's drawing for the book London (the drawing was engraved for the book by N. Pisan). Van Gogh writes about his copying of Newgate: The Exercise Yard by Dore in his letter to Theo (No 626).
